COVER STORY
Volunteering for the Arts Brings Industry Together
The new Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art is more than just a cultural statement. The low-budget urban renewal project combined the renovation and expansion of an historic office building with the volunteer efforts of 19 local architects and a generous design-builder to bring taste, grace and excitement to an energetic northern Florida city.

    FEATURE STORIES
Financing Opens Tap To Sweet-Water Solution
San Juan Capistrano is renowned for its 18th-century Spanish mission and celebrated in song as the place where the swallows return every March 19 on St Joseph's Day. When the little birds come back next year, this picturesque southern California coastal town will have a new claim to fame with water agencies and design-builders as well as romantics and birdwatchers.

Demonstration Project Saves Lives and Time
A number of haunting, painted wood crosses decorated with roses, ribbons and photos lines U.S. Highway 70 meandering through New Mexico's Hondo Valley. They are called descansos, the Spanish term for a roadside memorial, and the lovingly fashioned markers commemorate the loss of a friend or family member from an automobile accident. Now, thanks to a design-build demonstration project, descansos may become a relic of the past.

Rivals Crown State Capitol with New Dome
It took close to 90 years, but Oklahoma finally completed its state capitol dome in the fall of 2002-95 years after the state entered the union. According to all involved, the use of design-build was crucial to the success of the project.
