DBIA 2003 Professional Design-Build Conference

DBIA’s 2003 Professional Design-Build Conference in Orlando, Fla., The Magic of Integrated Services: Long Term Focus—Short Term Success, is a golden opportunity for leaders in the field to participate in quality educational and networking opportunities while exploring new integrated strategies. The two-and-a-half day conference, Oct. 8-10, 2003, provides over 50 hours of programmed educational sessions and keynote addresses including:

Richard Boyatzis, author, will speak on “Developing Emotional Intelligence and Competencies to Become An Effective Team Leader.” Boyatzis is one of the world's leading experts in leadership development and emotional intelligence.

Ed Barlow, futurist, will present “Anticipating and Preparing for the Long Term.” Barlow is president of Creating the Future Inc., an organization dedicated to trend spotting and strategic planning facilitation.

Chuck Davis, architect, will articulate his vision of “Achieving High Quality Design Through Integrated Design and Construction.” Davis is CEO and senior design principal of Esherick, Homsey, Dodge & Davis.

Robert L. Guyer, attorney and engineer, will present his “21 Fundamentals for Effective State Lobbying.” Guyer literally wrote the book on state lobbying, Guide to State Legislative Lobbying, a text used by hundreds of associations and corporations and in a number of universities.

Geoffrey Colvin, co-anchor, Wall $treet Week with Fortune is a longtime editor and columnist for Fortune magazine. He has been invited to address the topic: “Wall Street—Creating Business for the Design-Build Industry?” and the impact of business trends on the design and construction industry.

F. Joseph Moravec, Commissioner of the Public Buildings Service, U.S. General Services Administration, will discuss progress and opportunities in GSA’s design-build projects. Moravec is responsible for a portfolio of more than 330 million sq ft of real estate in more than 8,000 public and private buildings accommodating over 1 million federal workers.

Howard Decker, Chief Curator, National Building Museum, will take a look at the historical evolution of integrated design and construction. Decker develops themes and content for temporary exhibitions on America’s built environment as well as for Building America, the Museum’s planned core exhibition celebrating American Building innovation and ingenuity.

Back by popular demand is a Town Hall Meeting bringing together two panels of owners and allied professionals for a series of spirited discussions. The first panel will tackle “Risk Allocation/Transfer,” while the second panel will take a look at “Identifying Owner Needs in Design and Construction.” New this year is an interactive computer-based session that will allow participants to make critical decisions on a simulated design-build project and then measure the impact of those decisions on cost, time and quality of the final product.

Charles Pankow to Receive “DBIA Lifetime Achievement Award”

Pankow

Charles Pankow has been selected as recipient of the 2003 Brunelleschi Medal for his lifetime commitment to design-build and integrated services. Pankow founded the California based Pankow Cos. in 1963. He has made significant contributions to the design and construction industry through his outstanding leadership, public speaking and writing. In addition, Pankow is noted for inventing processes for manufacturing both hollow concrete piles utilizing a slipform technique and slipforming vertical air conditioning ducts. He also has developed innovative systems for increasing project automation, including total on-site precasting of structural and architectural elements and slipforming all vertical members of the structure. He has developed systems that have optimized the use of precast architectural elements by designing them to serve as formwork for poured-in-place structural elements.

Pankow will be presented with the Brunelleschi Medal Oct. 9, 2003, in Orlando at the DBIA annual conference. This is the fourth such award presented by DBIA and the Foundation for Integrated Services. Previous “Lifetime Achievement” award winners include John Portman Jr., FAIA; Charles H. Thorton, Ph.D., P.E.; and Preston H. Haskell, DBIA.
